Chapter One: Truth Hurts
Nobuto plopped onto the bed. He was bored and he heaved a sigh to let the room know how he felt. It had been so long since HIS death. No one called him by his name, they just referred to him as well...him. Nobuto missed him; they had been lovers, secretly of course. Only those in the band knew, but such was the case. When he died, Nobuto had sought comfort, but not even Takuya, his best friend at the time, could take this pain away. He remembered how Takuya had asked him later, a few months later, actually, to take their relationship a step farther. He could still remember the look on Takuya's face... that terrible, painful look... when he had told him no.
"I know we have been friends for so long... but why stop that now, Takuya?"
"Nocha."
"NO. I'm sorry..." Takuya had looked away, turned, and left the room. Nobuto would never forget that moment. It was the moment their relationship had ceased all together. No longer were they the close friends they had been. They no longer spoke unless they had to, for interviews and the like. He had known Takuya was bisexual, but when Takuya announced he had a girlfriend, Nobuto was shocked, hurt... and jealous, but couldn't figure out why he was surprised. The space between them only grew wider. Takuya had gotten to the point of refusing to talk to him and worse still, avoiding him at all cost. Nobuto sighed again and buried his head into his pillow. He had lost the last person that meant the world to him, and it was his own doing this time. He was startled from his dreamlike state when his ketai rang. When he answered it he was surprised to hear Takuya's voice on the other end.
"Takuya?"
"I just wanted to say hey."
"Oh...well...hey..."
"Yeah. See you tomorrow."
"--No!" Too late. Takuya had hung up. He let out a frustrated sigh and dialed Takuya's number.
"Mosh-"
"What did you want to talk about?"
"Nothing I just wanted to say hey."
"Are you sure?"
"...Yes."
"Because if you wanted to say something else, you can --"
"I have nothing else to say to you, Nobuto." Nobuto looked at the ceiling in exasperation.
"Then let me talk."
"...okay..."
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For being insensitive to you."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean when you...you asked me about...getting...us. You asked me about us." -Silence-
"...It's really late--"
"Would you be holding me right now?"
"Eh?"
"If I were there right now, would you be holding me?"
"...I don't want to talk about this. I don't think I can." Takuya said quietly. Nobuto could tell he was nervous.
"Takuya..."
"Goodnight." -dial tone-
"...night."

The next day, Takuya avoided him even more than before. When he walked past Takuya's dressing room, he stepped inside, closing and locking the door. Takuya looked up from his song.
"Arh?"
"Talk to me. This is getting ridiculous."
"There's nothing to talk about." Someone knocked on the door and a few seconds later, a soft voice called out.
"Takuya?" Nobuto sighed and stared at his shoes.
"You're right." Nobuto unlocked the door. Ai walked in. "There was never anything to talk about, was there?" He turned and left the door, slamming it behind him.
"Eh?" Ai asked
"Nobuto..." Takuya called. "Nobuto!¡±
¡°Damn,¡± he thought, "what have I done now?" He whispered, looking at the score sheet in his hands. He looked up at Ai, who stood there with wide eyes.
"I'm confused." She muttered.
~~~~~~~
"Katsu... he has pushed me out..." Nobuto sniffed. Katsuya pulled him close and let him cry. "He feels nothing for me now. Not even friendship...nothing..."
"He's just hurt...His ego was wounded and his confidence shattered. Nobu, he was rejected by someone he loved the most in this world and he is hurting."
"Loved the most?"
"Un... Nobu... he's been in love with you for years, but you were always taken, then when he saw a chance, he took it. But when you didn't reciprocate his love, he was very upset that he cried for twelve days.
¡°12 days? Wow¡¡±
¡°So, he shut himself off from everyone. And soon after that, you got a new song.¡±
"Chance¡?"
"You're so smart." Katsuya smiled.
"He loves me?"
"He has fallen madly in love with you, and he couldn't blame gravity for it."
"Katsuya, this is no time to joke."
"I don't joke about love."
"But if he loves me why is he so cold to me?"
"To keep himself from getting hurt again. He can pretend to be in love with someone else, but Nobu, he's not... He's only with Ai because he feels like that will distract him from you, but it's just getting worse. The only one he wants to be with is you. He told me himself."
"Hontou?"
"Un. The day you told him you said no."
CHAPTER TWO: Take Your Hand Or Let Go
Two Months later...
It was 11:35pm , cloudy and the air was somewhat stale, rain was coming soon, and somehow, Takuya found himself in front of Nobuto's door. He stood there for some time, just staring ahead, wondering if he should knock, or walk away. Before he realized what he was doing, his hand had already moved on its own accord. Panicking, he turned and quickly walked down the steps to leave when he heard the door open.
"Don't go... you came here on your own." He heard Nobuto whisper softly. Time seemed to slow down as he turned to look at Nobuto's silhouette at the doorway. He looked down, avoiding Nobuto's eyes, and walked up the steps, his feet heavy. "Come in." Nobuto smiled gently, ushering him in and closing the door. "Kick off your shoes, stay for a while..."
Takuya obeyed.
Nobuto watched him as they sat in silence, Takuya messing with the palms of his hands nervously.
"Thirsty?" Nobuto asked.
"Iie..."
"Hungry?"
"Iie..."
"... Nervous?"
"Un..." Takuya nodded slightly, still fidgeting before realizing what he had said. Nobuto couldn't help but smirk slightly.
"At least you can admit it..."
"I broke up with Ai today." Takuya said suddenly.
"... Oh... I thought you two were getting really close? I mean, not that you ever told me, I just assumed, you looked happy together..."
"We were only attached by skin, on my part anyway... I'm not big on emotional attachment, you know..."
"Yes. I do know that." Nobuto's tone was a little cold and it made Takuya look at him uneasily.
"You have every right to be upset with me, Nocha... I have been a lousy best--lousy friend...I was hurt...when you told me 'no'... I truly love you... having this one-sided, unrequited love isn't what I have always wanted." He smirked ruefully.
"It's painful... I never thought you would say no. I just expected you to love me like I -- but that type of love, your love, was not meant for me. Nou, he was good for you... I would only be terrible for you... I am glad in a way you said no. I'm such an awful person, Nobuto...you have seen that side of me all too much."
"Takuya...I was selfish to say no. I was still crying over something I couldn't get back... I do love you, Takuya... and it hurt me when you pushed me out of your life because I wasn't thining straight. I never thought you would just give up on me like that... if you had asked me a day or two later, I probably would have said yes," Nobuto whispered. Takuya's face fell. Nobuto knelt between his legs and cupped his face in his hands. "Oi... Taku...what are you planning?" Takuya looked into his eyes deeply.
"I'm going gay completely." He whispered, and then looked away. "Maybe I can find love somewhere else... I don't know. I may just be single forever. But I deserve no more than that." Takuya looked at him when he felt a finger fall over his lips.
"That's not true. You deserve happiness." |
